One Laptop per Child in Sonora

25 May

In March, the Secretaria de Educacion y Cultura in Sonora released a good and quite shocking news (I wasn’t expecting that in a good way). The news were released by their biweekly magazine ENLACE No. 185 (if you want to read) and other medias like newpaper and radio.

Sonora is implementing a program to give One Laptop to each student focusing on the less-priviliged ones. Wikipedia info here.

Un Nuevo Futuro is the organization in Sonora behind all this, with help of OneLaptopPerChild which is the global organization and OLPC Mexico which is the Mexico organizacion.

This is a great idea. I hope it has a great security system to avoid pornography and more adult-related topics. Also I hope there is not room for  Facebook, Twitter and Youtube, unless is for educational topics ONLY.  In Uruguay, there has been some controverty with this program according to Wikipedia due to the security system and other issues.

It’s such a breakthrough plan, but this computer are aimed for third-world or developing countries. I though Mexico wasn’t in the category anymore, according to wikipedia. Besides, Sonora was the third best state in Mexico. So, Are we really that needy for new laptops? Why don’t give the laptops to more needy states like: Chiapas, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Durango y Tabasco?

So far, Nayarit, San Luis Potosi and Sonora are starting the project.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s awesome: the news, the idea, and I want one laptop to try it…. What I don’t like is ALL students. I think other people need it more that we do in the main cities or in a well-positioned state.

Just personal opinion. I know to many student with “needs” with new cellphone or expensive sneakers. I ONLY hope that those laptops don’t end on sale because some students want a new cellphone.

I have seen on sale on ebay. No kidding!

More doubts about the laptop or just want to see it in action. Please bless the Youtube gods:
